How do I ask for support?

Many people believe that asking for help is an admission of weakness. Others may fear rejection or ridicule.

Why should I try it?

Asking others to help you change your eating and physical activity habits is not easy, but learning how to ask for help is one of the most important things you can do to make positive, long-term lifestyle changes. Remember, most family and friends want to help, you just have to tell them how.

How to do it

Use these tips to help you plan to ask for support. Once you identify the person, or people, you will approach take the following steps to ask for support.

1. Define

Think about the people around you and think about what they could do, or stop doing, to help you on your journey.
Example: It would be helpful if my husband didn’t eat food in front of me while we are watching TV after dinner.

2. Request

Ask your chosen supporter for support, with as much detail as possible. Tell them how it will make your journey easier. Ask your supporter if you can provide them with support in return.
Example: “When you eat food after dinner, can you eat it in the kitchen so that I’m less likely to eat? Is there anything you would like me to do in return?”

3. Follow up

Specifically let others know how what they are doing is helpful or could be more helpful.
Example: “Thank you for eating in the kitchen after dinner. It makes it easier for me to stick to the plan.”
