8 ideas to add to your new winter routine

Weekly Technique

A fresh perspective

Winter can feel daunting: colder weather, shorter days, less outdoor time. Just like we have so many other times during this year of change, it’s normal for our routines (like activity!) to feel interrupted when the seasons change. As we’ve already learned, the more consistent we are with healthy behaviours, the more they’ll feel like second nature, no matter what’s going on in our lives (or with the weather).

3 fast facts

1. A new season can interrupt the routines we’ve developed since the cues in our environment that were keeping our routines going have changed.

2. When it comes to being active, changing our routines from time to time may help us stay interested—and even enjoy it more.

3. To get and stay healthy, it’s best to leverage routines in ways that help us work with ourselves instead of against ourselves.

Try this technique

Mix things up by trying one of these winter weather ideas below. Remember to identify ways to incorporate them into your regular routine and lifestyle.

  • Need fresh air and looking to get in some steps for the day? Head outside during lunch when the sun’s still out (aka it’s warmer).

  • Set a new wake-up time to grab an extra hour of ZZZ’s or practise mindful breathing.

  • Before bed, turn off the TV and cosy up with a book. Bonus points for including a warm drink and blanket.

  • Get creative with your indoor workout routine. Take to the stairs in your home and stand up throughout the day.

  • Create a designated indoor activity space complete with a basket filled with a yoga mat, towel, and weights (canned goods work!) and try a workout in the WW app.

  • Embrace soup season. Meal prep on Sunday one of our recipes from the WW app, full of ZeroPoint™ foods!

  • In need of some family fun? Game on! Pull out the board games and puzzles on Friday night for some healthy competition.

  • Are your childrens' weekly football or running practices still on outside? Stay warm (and earn some FitPoints™) by walking laps around the field or playground.
