Both you and your bike need to be in good working order, so get it regularly serviced at a bike shop.

Don’t be distracted and stay safe. Forget about your mobile phone, this week’s to-do list and that bill you forgot to pay – enjoy being in the moment and keep your eyes on the road.

Invest in a bike bag or basket
Find a safe storage solution for your stuff. Shopping dangling from your handlebars makes it much harder to steer safely, putting you – and others around you – at risk.

Be assertive
Communicate with other road users using hand signals or eye contact, anticipate hazards in advance, and take the space you need on the road to avoid them; riding in the gutter is not safe, as you are less visible to motorists.

Wear bright or reflective clothing and equipment at night.
