There’s nothing heartier than cottage pie. Carrot, celery, tomato and gravy mix with mince creates a delicious filling which is made more wonderful with the crispy potato topping.


Brown onion

Lean beef mince, raw

480 g, (buy 600g), desiree variety, peeled, chopped

Gravy powder

2 tsp

Reduced fat oil spread

1 tbs

Skim milk

Extra light cheddar cheese

1 x 3 second spray(s)


  1. Lightly spray a large non-stick frying pan with oil and heat over medium heat. Add onion, carrot and celery and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Add beef and cook, breaking up any lumps, for 3–5 minutes or until browned. Add tomatoes and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 40 minutes or until slightly thickened.
  2. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 200°C or 180°C fan-forced. Cook potatoes in a steam bag following packet instructions or until very tender. Mash potatoes in a large bowl with spread and milk.
  3. Prepare gravy following packet instructions. Stir prepared gravy into meat mixture and cook for 1 minute. Spoon meat mixture into a 1.5L (6-cup) capacity ovenproof dish. Top with mashed potato and sprinkle with the 50% reduced fat Tasty Grated Cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until top is golden. Serve.


SERVING SUGGESTION: Steamed green vegetables.
