Yes, it’s a crazy-busy time of year—and while we can’t find more of those last minutes for shopping, cooking, or wrapping, we can keep the spirit of the holidays close with small changes that enhance the quality of our time with friends and family.

As your Weekly explains, it’s all about getting hygge with it. (Ok, it’s actually pronounced “hue-guh”.) This Danish word is loosely defined as an ambiance of comfort, coziness, and togetherness. A merrily crackling fire, a warm blanket, smiling faces around the table—they're all hygge.

The payoff goes beyond just feeling good: Bringing more hygge into your life can improve your overall well-being. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to do.

Creating hygge

According to Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute (now there’s a great job!) in Copenhagen, focus on atmosphere by lighting a candle; the soft glow of the flame creates a sense of security, comfort, and “cozy togetherness.” That’s the first step in “The Hygge Manifesto,” which forms the heart of Wiking’s The Little Book of Hygge.

The three ideas in your Weekly are elements of the Hygge Manifesto as well:

Presence. Put away your phone, turn off the TV, and turn your focus to now: where you are, who you’re with, what’s happening in the moment.

Togetherness. Help people bond over shared memories and mutual understanding: “Do you remember that time we…?”

Gratitude. Express it—often. What do you appreciate about friends and family? What are the good things that happen each day?

More hygge moves

These elements round out the rest of the Hygge Manifesto:

Pleasure: This one is self-evident. Savour sensory and mental delights: a back rub, favourite foods, the sun on your face, a beautiful painting, a captivating book…. You get the idea.

Equality: Appreciate the value of “we” over me” as you share both the work and the glory.

Comfort: Again, probably obvious. Whatever makes you feel most at ease and happy in your own skin, whether it’s a plush blanket or kind words from a neighbour when you’re feeling down.

Harmony: Being at one with yourself and being yourself with others—neither bragging nor self-deprecating.

Truce: Understanding that others’ opinions may differ and putting aside drama (and politics).

Shelter: As much in your heart and mind as the roof over your head, security and peace are the hallmarks.

Keep these concepts with you and you’ll always be able to tap into the spirit of hygge!
