How to survive—and thrive—throughout the holidays

FACT: This time of year can be busy and stressful. And when time is tight, self-care is one of the first things to go out the window. It can also be more challenging to stick to your typical routine of eating well, tracking food, being active, and getting a good night’s sleep. Choosing to set boundaries and prioritize time for yourself so you can find calm, stay on track, and relax isn’t selfish—it’s smart. Think of the oxygen mask rule: You need to make sure your mask is on or you won’t be any good to anyone else. Need help figuring out ways to carve out time to recharge? Use the ideas below to add in (and protect) time for yourself.

  1. Fit in activity: Grab a far-away parking spot or go for a walk while making calls.

  2. Like to run? Schedule a brisk jog with a family member to sweat off tension.

  3. Practice deep breathing. Try remembering to take a 5-minute break in between party prep.

  4. Embrace JOMO! (Aka the Joy Of Missing Out.) Say yes to parties that mean the most to you—and send a thoughtful note to the ones you skip.

  5. Going to a holiday party? Get ready with a friend for your next holiday party, and let the music—and dance breaks—flow.

  6. Take 20 minutes before bed for a warm bath or yoga.

  7. If you have overnight guests, take a half-hour alone to recharge. They’ll appreciate the break, too!

  8. Set a calendar reminder to make time for yourself. Just a few minutes spent doing something you love, like planning a vacation (even one you don’t actually intend to take), practicing meditation, listening to a podcast, or reading a good book.

  9. Think about what you’re grateful for. It can help you focus on the good things, no matter how stressful the day feels!

  10. Your happiness is important. It’s really common to potentially feel guilty, or maybe even a little rude, when you take time for yourself. But remember, your happiness is important, and your family and friends care about it, too! Taking time to decompress can help you reduce any feelings of tension you might have—which is likely to improve everyone’s holiday.
