8 ways to make morning meals matter

While the jury’s still out on whether or not breakfast is the most important meal of the day, our parents did have a point (thanks, Mom and Dad!). Those who start their morning with a balanced meal are more likely to engage in healthy habits. Yet, many of us still skip it or grab the easiest choice in favour of a little extra shut eye, getting kids ready, or the million other things thrown at us these days. No matter what’s getting in the way of breakfast, step one is recognizing—and accepting—that life happens. Then, we can find creative ways to reduce any blockers between us and the nutritious breakfast we deserve.

3 fast facts

  1. People who eat breakfast are more likely to have a lower body weight. That doesn’t mean eating breakfast causes weight loss, but there is a correlation between the two.

  2. People who eat breakfast are also more likely to engage in healthy habits, like activity.

  3. People who eat breakfast regularly have higher intakes of nutrients like fibre and calcium compared to those who skip it.

Try this technique

Try one or two of these strategies to make breakfast time a cinch.

  1. Prep ahead. Make a big bowl of fruit salad, enough to last a few days, so you can quickly grab some in the morning. Bonus: It’s a great source of dietary fibre and antioxidants.

  2. Break the “rules.” Not a fan of the usual eggs, yogurt, or granola? Have a turkey sandwich or the Salmon panzanella on the back of this card. (We won’t tell the breakfast police. Promise.)

  3. Embrace batch cooking. Cook hard-boiled eggs (you’ll want our boiled egg timer for that!), overnight oats, or mini egg muffins on Sunday—and consider yourself set for the week. Search #breakfast on Connect (almost 60,000 posts!) for tons of delicious recipes and ideas.

  4. Explore new recipes. Another source for *all* the tasty meals? The WW app! Just enter in the search bar the main ingredient you’re looking to use and scroll down for tons of recipe ideas.

  5. Throw out the clock. Who says breakfast needs to happen first thing? If you aren’t hungry when you wake up, have a 10 a.m. work and food break.

  6. Nighttime hacks. Having cereal? Set up your kitchen by placing your bowl and spoon out and pre-portioning your cereal. Making eggs? Put the pan and spatula on your stove top.

  7. Get chopped. Easily cut up onions and other veggies to add to egg dishes during your prep day.

  8. Set the mood. If feeling “fancy” (and frankly, better) for putting out an actual plate, napkin, silverware, even a placemat the night before is wrong...we don’t want to be right.
