10 ways to ease stress during tough times

Raise your hand if you’re feeling overwhelmed.... Repeat after us: It’s human nature to feel stressed, especially when our day-to-day lives don’t look the same as they used to.

3 fast facts

  1. When things are more out of our control than usual, it's helpful to remember—and focus on—the things we do have control over.

  2. By reducing or preventing stress, we’re not only taking care of ourselves, we’re able to be better caretakers for others.

  3. Paying attention to and managing stress can help us stay on track with our overall health and wellness, develop new routines, and remember what’s important to us.

This week’s technique

Sometimes, stress can lead us to respond in unhelpful ways, like turning to food for comfort—and ultimately move us further from our goals. By responding to stress in more helpful ways, we can find a sense of balance and stay on track, meaning we can take better care of ourselves and others.

Try one or two of these suggestions to help ease stress this week.

  • Breathe in (and out). Staying centred and present can do wonders for a worried mind. Check out a meditation in the WW app.

  • Shift your perspective. Write down three things you’re grateful for—no matter how small they might seem. (Every dose of gratitude helps!)

  • Digitally unplug. The news is a *lot* these days. Dedicate a daily “no screen” hour to put down your phone, close your laptop, and turn off the TV.

  • Keep moving. If possible, take a walk around the block or bike to the park. For indoor activities, try an audio workout in the WW app—no equipment needed!

  • Help others. It’s a great way to find purpose during these challenging times. Check in on an elderly neighbour, post an encouraging message in Connect.

  • Spring clean. No time like the present, right? Take it one room—or closet—at a time. You’ll feel super satisfied and accomplished.

  • Get fresh air. It has tons of benefits, including reducing stress. If you can’t step outside for a moment, prop open a window and move your chair near it.

  • Stay connected. Now more than ever, it’s important to reach out to loved ones. Sub in a virtual coffee date or family reunion until you start the real deal back up again. And don’t forget to join your Virtual Studio group in Connect for a great dose of community.

  • Start journaling. Feeling all the feelings during this time is normal. Writing (on paper or electronically) can help process your thoughts and clear your head.

  • Schedule “me” time. Hear us out…. Prioritizing self-care is pretty crucial right now. And even if you’re in a packed house, be sure to find a way to connect with you. Ask your significant other to watch the kids while you take a long shower or grab time while everyone’s still sleeping to dive into a book.
