Fitness ideas without the gym

1. Take a tap dancing class

You’ll find that an hour or so of making like Fred Astaire will do the trick. The top hat and cane are optional!

2. Go shopping

And do it for at least an hour. Walking, climbing the escalators and trying on clothes can be very rewarding! Just keep up a moderate pace.

3. Hone your hula-hooping skills

Hula hooping really can work up a sweat! And here’s a hot tip for better hooping: move your hips front to back, not in a circle.

4. Do a spot of gardening

Pruning, weeding, mowing the lawns – it all counts as physical activity. Just try to make it as physically active as possible by using tools like rakes, watering cans and hand-held saws rather than more high-tech versions.

5. Have a go at salsa dancing

It’s fun, energetic and a great way to meet new people, too.

6. Try your hand at rock climbing

Clambering up and down vertical walls for half an hour – indoors or out – is an exhilarating way to workout.

7. Play with your kids

Play hide and seek, piggy-back, rough-and-tumble games or just go kick a ball with them. This not only helps you achieve your goals but it makes memories that you and your kids will cherish.

8. Become a tourist

Wander around your local city - see the sites, visit a museum or the local farmer's markets. You’ll be amazed by how many steps you can accumulate without even trying!

9. Scrub, scrub, scrub

Ever noticed how hot you get while scrubbing the floor? That heat is generated by all your working muscles and cleaning sure uses a lot of them!
