Affogato means ‘drowned’ and is a traditional Italian dessert. Hot coffee poured over cold ice-cream results in a magical melted mixture with a caffeine kick.

Ingredients

Instant coffee powder

1 tbs, or granules

Reduced fat vanilla ice cream

2 scoop(s), small, (2 x 80g scoops)

Sweet-style white wine

2 tbs, (marsala) (see tip)

Almond bread

20 g, (see tip)

Instructions

  1. Combine coffee with ½ cup (125 ml) boiling water in a heatproof jug. Stir until dissolved.
  2. Place ice-cream into two heatproof serving glasses. Pour over the marsala and hot coffee. Serve immediately with almond bread.

Notes

TIP: Kahlua, Tia Maria or Frangelico liqueurs can be used instead of marsala. Similar to Italian biscotti, almond bread is a sweet bread, cut into wafer-thin slices and baked until crisp. It’s available from continental delicatessens and major supermarkets.
