Body By Bethenny

Body by Bethenny

This was a 40-minute vinyasa (or flow) yoga workout. While it’s definitely not for true beginners, Kristin McGee — who leads the workout — gives modifications for different fitness levels, and does a great job explaining the benefits of each pose. Bethenny, of Real Housewives of New York City fame, does the exercises alongside Kristin. She’s great fun and it’s almost like you’re taking yoga class with a friend. There’s also a 10-minute light weight workout, which you can do with 3-5 pound weights. The DVD also has inserts from Bethenny’s book, The Skinnygirl Dish. - Amy Ruderman, Manager of Strategy and Analysis

Exhale Lean Toned

Core Fusion: Lean and Toned

Using light weights, a chair and a mat, I really had fun with this DVD. Led by husband and wife Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito, who developed Core Fusion, the instructions were super clear. I really liked how there were five different segments, just 10 minutes each. Each one focused on a different body part so by the time I was tired of repeating an exercise, it was time for a new one. I was a bit sore the next day — but in a good way! Just a reminder of how I had a really great workout the day before. - Laura Smith, Intern

Bar Method

Bar Method: Accelerated Workout DVD

Bar Method incorporates isometrics and a bit of cardio, as well as ballet-type moves and yoga-like stretches. For this nearly hour-long workout you don’t need a bar, but can use a chair to hold on to for balance. Starting with simple moves like knee-lifts and push-ups, followed by isometrics — or tiny movements with a 3-5 pound weight — this workout really makes you feel the burn. It also focuses a lot on stretching throughout the workout, so it’s great for those looking to increase flexibility. - Mary Elizabeth Hurn, Success Stories Coordinator

Iron Core Boot Camp

Iron Core Bootcamp

This is a great introduction to kettlebells that you can do at home. The instructions were very clear, albeit giving you a hard workout! They weren’t kidding when they called it bootcamp! I had a lot of fun and really felt like I got a great workout. Normally cardio alone is a breeze for me, but adding weights gave me the extra push I needed to take it to the next level. My arms were definitely sore the next day. Because those are the muscles I use the least, I feel like that part of my body got the best workout. - Kristina Lucarelli, Editorial Production Coordinator

Montenegro Method

Montenegro Method DVD Set

Marta Montenegro breaks down each exercise in this series really clearly, so beginners should have no trouble performing them. We love how she demonstrated the advanced version of each movement as well as a version for beginners. It was a really solid mix of cardio and total body strength training. The 10 Exercises 10 Minutes DVD is great for people who are always on the run but have a desire to stay healthy and maintain a great body. Also, having an instructor in such great shape as Marta really motivates you to live a healthier lifestyle. -Emily Warshowsky and Lauren Marchetti, Account Executives

Zumba DVD Set

Zumba: Total Body Transformation System

This set is great for people who don’t like the traditional gym class. Instead of using weights, the set comes with maraca-like “toning sticks” which give you a little added weight, if you’d like it. There’s a Fitness Basics DVD, which teaches beginners all the dance steps very slowly, so that when you watch the other workouts like 20-Minute Express or Cardio Party, you’re prepared. You really don’t feel like you’re working out! Because the music is so high energy, I felt more like I was dancing at a club. This is also a great intro for people who might be nervous to try a real Zumba class. You can dance and be silly in the comfort of your own home. - Mary Elizabeth Hurn, Success Stories Coordinator

FitIn5_Total Body Tone

Fit in 5: Total Body Tone

This DVD has five different workouts — strength, yoga, Pilates, abs and cardio. I really felt like I was getting a well-rounded workout. This is definitely more than I would push myself to do at the gym. I also like the flexibility of using this DVD. If you only have 20 minutes a day to work out, you can do a different workout each day for five days. All you need are light weights and a mat. - Laura Smith, Intern

My Best Friend Workout

My Best Friend’s Workout with Tricia Murphy Madden

The workout is designed for dog owners and is much more fun if it is done with a dog, but it can be done without one. It can be done in your yard, in the park or even on the sidewalk. The video is broken down into four categories, depending on the type of dog you own: lap dogs, old timers, ball fetchers and marathoners. Each section offers a decent workout and there are many similar exercises in each. The exercises in the video are primarily low impact muscle strengthening and body toning exercises, but there are some higher impact options, as well. This is not a cardio workout. Once you view the video indoors, you take the “cheat sheet” and do the workout outside while walking with and playing with your dog. By doing more repetitions and adding exercises from the other categories, you can expand the workout. - April Uram, friend of Leslie Fink, MS, RD, Nutritionist and Food Editor
