Seeing a photo of herself at a family reunion, looking heavier than she'd ever imagined, gave Cami the wake-up call she needed to kick-start her weight loss.

For a while my weight was steadily increasing and there seemed to be nothing I could do about it. I saw nothing stopping me from surpassing the 20 pounds of extra weight I was carrying, because that’s the path I was on. I looked matronly, and I started dressing and acting that way, too. I hated the fact that I couldn’t muster the control to stick to a plan that allowed me to be healthier. On top of my internal struggle with weight and food, it didn’t help being around my thin friends. They made me feel self conscious about my own bad decisions, even though they didn’t mean to. I dreaded reunions with old friends who hadn’t seen me in a few years, and my social life was suffering.

Reality check


I had a few “last straw” moments where I tried to do something about my weight, but not knowing about the Weight Watchers approach, nothing I tried seemed to stick. Once, I had a dress on at a family reunion that I'd chosen because I thought it was flattering. When we got our pictures back, I couldn’t believe how much heavier I looked in the photo than how I'd imagined myself. But there it was, in print! At that same family reunion, there was a picture of me from a few years back, and people remarked that they couldn’t believe how slim I used to be. It just reinforced the fact that I had to get back down to a healthy weight.

Another defining moment was when I attended a health fair and the nurse told me, quite loudly, that I needed to lose 20 pounds. It was embarrassing, but I also thought, if she only knew how much I wanted that, and just didn’t know how to do it. So the day I decided to join Weight Watchers meetings and began to follow the POINTS® Weight-Loss System wasn’t exactly dramatic. A friend of mine had been hinting at it forever, and I finally decided to give it a shot. What did I have to lose, other than weight?

Support is key


I have lots of friends who support me by being OK with the lifestyle change I made that has turned me into a healthier person. It's OK with them if I eat differently in restaurants. It’s OK with them that I have to modify my food choices. Their willingness to accept and support me has been priceless. But my husband was, and continues to be, my biggest supporter. He has always believed I am capable of doing whatever I set my mind to, and he helped me by being incredibly accommodating as I made changes in our home environment. We’ve completely revamped the food we eat on a regular basis. There are some treats that we no longer keep in the house, and instead of being upset about it, he continues to support me. In fact, we noticed he was gaining some weight as I would have him to order some not-so-good foods, like French fries, just so I could have a taste. This wasn’t a good idea in the long run, so now we both moderate our choices, and split dessert occasionally. All in all, though, the decisions we’ve made as a family have helped both of us in the 5 ½ years I have been on maintenance.

All in all, I couldn't have asked for better results. I feel great, look great, and love being a role model and leader for all my members. Becoming a Leader has been such a fulfilling experience. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to hand a room full of New Yorkers, as I'm Southern, but the first time I stood in front of the room, the rest came naturally. And what I love even more is seeing the success around my meeting room. Everyone has their own way in which the program works for them, and the key is finding that one way Weight Watchers can work for you.

Cami’s Tips
  • Before you eat it say these words, "I’m going to eat this_______, and I’m going to enjoy it." If you don't enjoy something, modify it until you find something that works for you.
  • I love looking for recipes by ingredient. If I’ve heard people talking about jicama in the meeting, and that’s a new food for me, I’ll search recipes for jicama, find a good one and cook away!
  • If you're in a restaurant that serves tortilla chips before you even order, try this. Smash four tortilla chips in a napkin and presto! You suddenly have 20 small tortilla chips. You'll be able to snack as long as your friends for a low POINTSvalue.
  • Remember that between All and Nothing, are a lot of Somethings! If you go overboard one day, don't let it sabotage your whole week. Take everything one day at a time.
