Losing for the Kids

“Noemi, you can lose the weight.” My coworker, a Lifetime Member, told me that if I wanted to lose the extra pounds, Weight Watchers was the way to go.
*People following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.

When her husband had surgery, Noemi had a wake up call. She was overweight and had multiple health conditions. With two young children, she realized she had to lose weight to ensure she’d be around to see them grow up. She joined Weight Watchers and began following the Plan to lose the weight.

The wake-up call

My husband had just gone through major surgery. Being a mother to two beautiful and talented children made me think, “What if something had gone wrong?” I knew then that I had to become healthier. And to become healthier I had to lose weight to be sure I had more days to be with them.

“Noemi, you can lose the weight.” My coworker, who was a Lifetime Member, told me that if I wanted to lose the extra pounds, Weight Watchers was the way to go. When I first joined, that same friend encouraged me to work out, even if it was only for a few minutes. I had been working at the YMCA for years and never took advantage of the equipment. The word "exercise" wasn’t in my vocabulary. Now I realize the importance of it and can use the elliptical machine for a full hour!

Getting started

I started by making small changes in my lifestyle. I made sure to buy lots of fruits and vegetables when I went grocery shopping. It’s not enough to just have lots of food in the house. It has to be the right foods. The first month I lost 8 pounds*. That’s when I realized I can really do this.

Staying on track

With my eTools subscription, I was able to use the iPhone app to track my PointsPlus values. Being a busy working mom, it’s great that I can track on the go. I can also plan out my meals in the morning and look back to my iPhone throughout the day. This helps me stay on track. The meetings also really help to keep me motivated. I learn tips and tricks from other members and hearing their stories is really encouraging.

I also learned how to control my portion size. I’m from Puerto Rico and my family loves to eat rice, beans and pork. The thing I love about Weight Watchers is that I can still enjoy those things, as long as it’s in moderation. If I eat healthily throughout the day, I can have the rice, beans and pork that night. But maybe I’ll only have half as much as I used to and load up on other healthy options like salad and vegetables.

Healthy wife, healthy life

As a result of Weight Watchers, my family has also gotten healthier. My kids now eat so much better than before which makes me feel great. I feel like I’m giving them tips for healthy eating which I know they will keep for the rest of their lives.

Noemi’s Tips
  • Buy foods that are healthy, but that your family will enjoy. You’ll be more likely to stay on track if you don’t need to make yourself a separate meal.
  • Make small changes like skim milk instead of whole and wheat bread instead of white. These may seem hard at first, but over time it just becomes second nature to make these choices.
  • Keep tracking. Even when it seems time-consuming, make sure to track your PointsPlus values. Tracking is the key to keeping the weight off.
