New Game, Same Result: Success

Jenny McCarthy interviewing Ron Darling
At the 20-year reunion of the 1986 World Series Champs, former major league pitcher turned broadcaster Ron Darling tried squeezing into his old uniform. Appalled at the result, Ron decided he didn’t want to become a cliché—a fat former athlete. Needing to shed pounds without altering his busy lifestyle, Ron committed to losing weight through Weight Watchers and subscribed to and became a spokesperson for Weight Watchers Online for Men.

Q&A

An Emmy-award winning broadcaster losing weight during a grueling baseball season – sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? We asked Ron Darling how he did it.it.

Did you find it easy to follow the Weight Watchers plan?
Absolutely. Weight Watchers doesn’t require you to buy special diet food. I’m still able to enjoy ballpark franks and my mother’s chicken adobo, as long as it’s in moderation. When it comes to eating in, it’s just a matter of filling my cabinets with wholesome foods like fresh fruit and whole wheat bread.

Do you have to make any major sacrifices being on plan?
Not at all. I didn’t even have to give up my post-game beers with the boys. The truth is I can still fit in a couple of Amstel Lights and slices of pizza without hurting my weight loss too badly.

Since you’re on the road with the team so much as a broadcaster, you must eat out a lot. How did you deal with that?
Well, with my lifestyle, I encounter a lot of junk food hubs like airports and ballparks, so it’s important for me to know what the best food options are while I’m on the run. Weight Watchers Online for Men is a great resource for finding ways to stay on track no matter where you are. At restaurants, which I go to all the time, I eat what I want, maybe go with a side salad instead of fries, and track what I’ve eaten online the following morning. If I have a huge meal, no problem. I’ll just exercise a little longer the next day and make sure I get back on plan.

After five months following Weight Watchers, what is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
For me, there’s nothing more crucial than being aware of what I’m putting in my body. If I put bad stuff in there, I’m going to feel bad, so I plan ahead. For example, my workday begins at 7:00 p.m., so dinnertime is usually around 1:00 a.m., and by then I’m absolutely starving. In order to avoid stuffing myself, I grab a piece of fruit around the fifth or sixth inning—that way I’m not nearly as hungry by the time I’m done with work. Then it’s easier for me to have a sensible dinner.

What advice can you offer to other guys looking to lose weight?
Give Weight Watchers Online for Men a try -- you follow the plan online, and can still eat your favorite foods, as long as you control your portions. Just use common sense. You already know the things you shouldn’t be eating, and it gives you the tools you need to find healthier substitutions for the bad stuff. You’re not always going to score a hundred percent; that’s just life, but you’ll have what you need to get back on track.

What are your plans now that you’ve reached goal?
I’m definitely planning to keep going with the strategies I’ve learned. What’s great about Weight Watchers Online for Men is I’ve got a place to come back to if I slip up. The tools that helped me drop these 30 pounds* are always going to be there to keep me where I need to be.

Ron's Playoff Predictions

Autographed baseball by Ron Darling
This is shaping up to be quite an exciting October. In the AL, I see Boston beating Anaheim and the Yankees over the Indians. In the NL, I’ve got to go with the red-hot Phillies over the equally red-hot Rockies, and I think the Cubs will pull it out over the Diamondbacks. In the fall classic, we’re looking at Boston vs. Philadelphia, and I’m calling the Red Sox to win it all. Hey, it’ll be easy for me to root for my hometown team.
