How to make activity feel more fun

Whether you're excited to move more or struggling to stay motivated, you can build momentum with a little help from your friends—or your family, coach, community…

Try this!

Which sounds most like you? I love the energy of a group—meeting new people is fun. I prefer being active alone but want encouragement. I enjoy being active with loved ones I trust. Get others involved Join a local sports league or activity group, like a hiking or gardening club. Set activity goals and check in with a supportive person weekly to discuss. Make a regular walking date with a friend—in person or while catching up over the phone. Leverage your WeightWatchers community Engage often with a Connect group for your favourite activity. Share goals and wins on Connect, with your coach, or at your Workshop. Post an activity photo on Connect. Ask a fellow WeightWatchers member to join you. Write out a plan to amplify your activity I’m going to involve ________________ (person or group) when I ________________ (activity) on ________________. (day or date)

Let’s dive a little deeper…

Think about the most fun you’ve had in the last few weeks or when you’ve felt especially inspired or encouraged. Chances are, other people were around—your best friend or family, friendly faces at your WeightWatchers Workshop, an energetic room of concertgoers.

Humans thrive when we connect with or feel supported by others. Infuse that energy into your activity routine, and it’s likely to feel more enjoyable, so you want to do it more. Sharing the activity experience with others can also build confidence, inspire you to rev up the intensity, and make whatever you do feel easier.

Lots of people struggle with getting and staying active—it’s normal. But moving more is a key strategy for losing weight and keeping it off. (Almost two-thirds of WeightWatchers® Success Registry* members reported being active at a moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes a day “most of the time” or “always,” compared to only 14.8% of the study’s weight-stable control group.) Finding ways to make moving your body something you actually like and—dare we say—even look forward to will help you get that much closer to your goals.

3 fast facts

  1. Support and encouragement from others helps us move more.

  2. When people we trust believe in our ability to be active, we’re more likely to believe it too.

  3. When we add activity to a healthier eating pattern, we can lose more weight than if we only change what we eat.

*The WeightWatchers Success Registry is a research study composed of WeightWatchers members who lost at least 9 kgs and maintained it for one year.
