Before you get started, there are a few things to keep in mind. In order to follow the Weight Watchers Program, you must:
Weigh at least 5 pounds more than the minimum weight for your height and weight, according to the Weight Watchers Healthy Weight Ranges.
Not be pregnant.
Not have an active medical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa.
Can I follow Weight Watchers if I'm on medication or breastfeeding? What about diabetes?
The Weight Watchers plan is designed to meet nutritional recommendations for healthy people. If you are taking medication or have a medical condition, you are strongly encouraged to take the Plan to your physician or dietician for review. Modifications made by health professionals are your responsibility and should be taken very seriously.
Nursing moms: Weight Watchers provide a special weight loss plan created specifically for the needs of nursing mothers. We strongly suggest you consult your physician before beginning any weight-loss plan while still breastfeeding.
Diabetics: If you have diabetes, take the Weight Watchers plan to your physician or dietician for review to make the necessary adjustments to meal patterns, food choices, and portioning. It is your responsibility to adhere to modifications made by your health care professional.
As of Dec 6th 2015 Weight Watchers accepts individuals from 13 to 17 years of age for membership as long as they have written medical permission from their physician (or designated health professional such as Nurse Practitioner) indicating a BMI percentile of 95 or higher and a 3 month weight goal. The weight goal will not be assigned by WW staff.
Upon registering, parents or guardians must:
• Provide a physician’s note giving permission to follow the plan, and include current BMI percentile and 3-month weight goal. To be eligible for membership the BMI must be at the 95th percentile or above. Eligibility for membership is accepted based on the provision of a physician’s note.
• Sign the Health Release on the registration form.
• Follow the Food Plan recommendations as outlined below. In addition, rate of weight loss must be closely monitored to ensure it is not too rapid. See Rapid Weight-Loss procedures in Section II.A.6.
• Adolescents should see their physician every 3 months for a review of progress, make sure current rate of weight loss is healthy, as well as set a weight goal for the next 3 months. This applies to adolescents who are Lifetime Members also.
• The same fee structure applies to adolescents as for all other Members; however, they are not eligible to purchase a Monthly Pass (MP).
