My kids were like the food police, like tracking was a game. It helped them eat better, too!
In Vanessa’s words:
During my third pregnancy, my doctor told me I had gestational diabetes. I was devastated. It didn’t just last during my pregnancy: He told me I had a 60 percent chance of being diagnosed with diabetes later in life, and my unborn son ran a huge risk of contracting the disease as well. I felt so guilty that my unhealthy lifestyle was affecting my child. I knew I needed to lose weight in order to be a proper role model for him and my two daughters.
Bye, bye, bad habits
I started tackling some of my usual routines right away. For one, I loved fast food—I worked at a Burger King at the time, so that didn’t help—and I used to drink three or four sodas every day. I tried cutting it all out at first, but then I learned that moderation was a better option. After three weeks, I found that I didn’t crave those things anymore, and that was so freeing! Realizing that my body was capable of seeing positive changes was enlightening and encouraging.
I started walking my dog more often and doing workout videos at home. When I heard about free Zumba classes at the local church I gave it a try, and I fell in love. Zumba doesn’t really feel like exercising—it’s a party! We perform new dances to different music every week, which keeps it entertaining. It gets me super energized—I do it at least once a week, and I can even bring my kids, too.
Get a buddy
I had the support of my meetings, especially my Leader—I even switched meetings to follow by Leader when I found out she was going to another location—but I wanted more guidance throughout the week. I found weight-loss buddies through a WW group on Facebook. Several of us have exchanged phone numbers, and we reach out if we want to celebrate, or if we’re struggling. If I’m having a rough day, I reach out to members from the group and they help me cope. Support is everything; it’s important to find people who build you up, not tear you down.
Feeling my best
I’m so much healthier, physically and emotionally. According to my doctor, I’m no longer at risk for diabetes! I don’t get tired playing soccer with my daughter, pushing my son on the swings, or biking all together. I’m also willing to take risks—I recently started my own cleaning business! I feel like I’ve won the lottery of life, and it’s everything I imagined it would be.
