We’ve made our version of kid-friendly sloppy joes mild enough to pass muster with even the pickiest eater, but don’t worry—there’s plenty of flavor here. Pass around your favorite hot sauce for extra heat.

Ingredients

Olive oil

2 tsp

Uncooked 93% lean ground turkey

1 pound(s), (7% fat or less)

Canned diced tomatoes

14½ oz

Uncooked onion(s)

1 small, chopped

Uncooked celery

1 rib(s), medium, chopped

Dark brown sugar

1½ Tbsp

Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp

Ground cumin

1½ tsp

Vinegar

1 tsp

Chili powder

1 tsp

Kosher salt

½ tsp

Plain hamburger bun

6 item(s), split and toasted

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add turkey and cook, breaking it apart with wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 5 minute.
  2. Transfer turkey to 5- or 6-quart slow cooker. Stir in all remaining ingredients except hamburger buns. Cover and cook until flavors blend and sauce is slightly thickened, 3–4 hours on High or 6 to 8 hours on Low.
  3. Spoon about 1/2 cup of turkey mixture onto each bun.
  4. Per serving: 1 sandwich
