This four-ingredient hot and filling grilled sandwich is sure to satisfy your taste buds. The buttery toasted bread, warmed ham, and wonderfully melty cheese create a comfort-food meal that’s would be welcome for lunch or dinner. The traditional version of this popular Italian sandwich is made with Italian bread, but any bread will work. Here we’ve opted for high-fiber bread to amp up the nutrition, but you could use any variety that you like. Serve each sandwich with a handful of celery and carrot sticks or fresh fruit to balance the richness of the sandwich.

Ingredients

Unsalted butter

2 tsp, softened

High-fiber bread

4 slice(s)

Low fat Swiss cheese

2 oz, 2 (1-ounce) slices

Cooked lean ham

6 oz, 6 (1-ounce) reduced-sodium slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat a panini or sandwich press or set a nonstick ridged grill pan over medium heat. Spread 1⁄2 teaspoon butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Place 2 slices of the bread, buttered side down, on a work surface and layer each with 1 slice Swiss and 3 slices ham. Cover each sandwich with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side out.
  3. Place the sandwiches on the press and close the lid or place them on the grill pan and cover with a heavy skillet. Cook until the sandwiches are browned and the cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. (Turn the sandwiches halfway through the cooking time if using a grill pan.) Cut in half and serve. Yields 1 sandwich per serving.
