Waiting For Tomorrow

By Shani Petroff

When I mess up my eating, when I make bad choices, when I go over my SmartPoints® budget, I sometimes say, “Since I already screwed up, I might as well eat whatever I want today and start over tomorrow.”

That needs to stop. It’s totally ridiculous.

I stubbed my toe the other day. I didn’t say, “Okay, hurt one, might as well hurt them all.”

My charger for my phone is broken. I didn’t then go and trash the phone, my laptop, and every other electrical appliance in my house.

I got home later than expected and wasn’t going to get a full night’s sleep. I didn’t decide, “Well, if I can’t get the perfect amount of sleep, I might as well not go to bed at all.”

Yet, when it comes to food, I rationalize the idea of tomorrow or Monday or next week. But the truth is, it’s no different than the other examples. If I lose a quarter, I wouldn’t then take all of my money and throw it to the wind, so why would I do that with my SmartPoints? Going over by five is significantly better than going over by 50 or by 500. Having a free-for-all doesn’t fix a mistake; it just makes it worse.

So, I say no more waiting for tomorrow. A small snowball doesn’t have to turn into an avalanche. There’s no time like the present, so if you are on track — wonderful, but if you’ve slipped, then just dust yourself off, and get right back on.

Part of this process is learning new healthy habits, and there’s no time like right now.

We can do this!
