Stuck Inside

When it’s cold out I sometimes have a love/hate relationship with my apartment. I love staying home and not having to brave the elements outside, but I hate feeling like I’m cooped up in a box.

And while spring is technically here, it certainly doesn’t feel like it in my area. So, I’ve been trying to come up with some ways to get myself moving and my blood flowing when I feel like I’m trapped inside my apartment:

Makeshift home gym. My apartment’s tiny. I can’t fit any big equipment, so I’ve stocked up with some small stuff. I have hand weights, a yoga mat, medicine ball, even a blow-up stability ball. When I can’t get to the gym, or when I feel like staying in and watching TV, I pull them out and do some floor exercises.

Exercise videos. I own a bunch of exercise DVDs; there’s also a bunch online. It’s an easy way to have the class experience without actually having to go to a class.

Stretching. If I don’t feel like lugging out the weights or doing a full workout with a video, but would rather have something more low-key, stretching is a great way to get in some activity. It wakes me up and makes my whole body feel better.

Cleaning. While I don’t have a huge space, the amount of things that need cleaning is surprisingly high. Whether it’s the floors, scrubbing the tub, dusting my books, shelves, etc., there’s always something to do—and often, after I’m finished, it feels like I’ve had a workout!

Stairs. While my apartment itself doesn’t have any stairs, my building does. Last week, all of the elevators were out again, so I got pretty well acquainted with each flight. I had to lug groceries, deliveries, and more up numerous times. While having to do it is frustrating, choosing to do it is a lot more fun—and at the end of the day, they both make me feel accomplished.

Dancing. Even though I mean to, I don’t do this one enough. It’s actually really fun to put on some music and get moving. It relieves some stress and helps me get in a little exercise.
