I know this is going to come as a huge surprise to you all, but I do not view myself as a vixen. As much as I wish I was dripping with as much sex appeal as Rihanna does when she’s folding clothes or tweezing her brows (Who am I kidding? She has people to do these things for her), I have accepted myself as I am.
However, I attended a VIXEN WORKOUT class in midtown NYC and my perspective on female sexiness has definitely shifted. Here I was, in a sisterhood of wedge sneakers, plaid shirts, and long hair, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect.
According to the website, “each Vixen Workout creates a fun club atmosphere where women can let loose, forget responsibilities, and transform into their ‘alter-ego’ or as we say, ‘getting your Beyoncé, Ciara, Rihanna on.’ ”
In the beginning of class, a sort of manifesto led by the instructor was chanted — a fun poem about confidence, sassiness, and positive body image. Then we jumped into about 60 minutes of raw, sweaty, sexy dance routines set to the most popular rap, hip-hop, and pop songs of the year. It was somewhat easy to follow along, though I definitely felt my rookie coming through as the others in attendance really seemed to have the moves down.
Didn’t matter though. When the instructor shouted that we’d be burning 700 calories, I shook it like there was no tomorrow. (For the record, you can burn 400–600 calories as a newbie and 1,000 as a veteran who knows the steps.)
There was a lot of posing in the mirror and strutting it — sort of like Fifth Harmony or The Pussycat Dolls — and I wasn’t too terribly comfortable with those parts. However, I could see how an endorphin-pumping, carefree hour of dancing could help anyone get her groove back. In fact, here’s a list of reasons to go to a Vixen class to re-boost your confidence and motivation:
- Bad day at work
- Had a baby six months ago and still not used to postpartum body
- Terrible Tinder date
- Bad breakup
- Need a night away
- Stressed waiting for your bar exam score
- Tired of jogging
- You need to reconnect with your girlfriends but don't want to do dinner or a happy hour
- It’s healthier than a red velvet cupcake
- It’s healthier than wine
- Do you still need more reasons?
I highly recommend Vixen for those members who love hip-hop and don’t mind some initial intimidation. It’s a safe space to come out of your shell and as Justin Timberlake and Timbaland once said, “get your sexy on.”
