Cool Sweets to Beat the Heat

I have one longstanding rule for summer vacation: Ice cream must be eaten every day. Considering that the owner of the soft-serve stand near our house is a Weight Watchers member, I have a leg up here. But as much as I’d love to buy a small fro-yo from her every day, that hasn’t always been possible. Instead, I improvise.

For 0 SmartPoints® value, you can’t go wrong with frozen fruit. Bananas turn creamy, watermelon chunks get slushy, and grapes become miniature scoops of sorbet. And if you want something a little more elegant, Mango-Lime Granita has 0 SmartPoints value, too.

When I was a kid I was a sucker for strawberry shortcake bars from the Good Humor man. This recipe replicates them, for only 3 SmartPoints value.

I love a simple, classic ice cream sandwich — it’s a great way to spend 6–8 SmartPoints, if you ask me — but this recipe for Mini-Mint Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Sandwiches (4 SmartPoints value/serving) would make me mighty happy, too.

At the supermarket near our house, a self-serve Slush Puppie machine greets you at the entrance. On a hot day, it’s all I can do to resist — but for 14 SmartPoints value, 99% of the time I manage to walk right by. A much better, homemade option: This Raspberry Iced Tea Slushy. At just 4 SmartPoints value, it's a steal! 

When I want something that feels shmancy enough for company (but at 9 SmartPoints value per serving, won’t blow my budget), I turn to things like this Frozen Peaches and Cream Cake.

My kid loves cookies and cream ice cream. A Cookies and Cream Shake makes us both happy, for 8 SmartPoints value.

Sometimes, nothing less than a full-on sundae will do. I like to take this recipe for Chocolate Ice Cream Sundae, which has just 6 SmartPoints value, and drizzle it with a little chocolate syrup for another 3 SmartPoints value. It feels indulgent enough for a vacation day, that’s for sure.
