How to set achievable goals and stay focused

Published 5 February, 2021

This may sound familiar! We start the new year setting goals we want to achieve. Getting fitter, exercising more, focusing on our mental health, achieving a better work/life balance, you name it. Everybody has their own goals and resolutions, but are we actually able to stick to them beyond January?

Forbes advises that nearly every study shows that 80% of New Year’s Resolutions are already dropped by February. Have you managed to keep going with yours? If you’re struggling to find motivation, especially during this lockdown, we want to help you to set achievable goals and give you our top tips on how to stay focused!

Setting up realistic and achievable goals

A potential problem with New Year’s Resolutions is that we expect too much of ourselves. We might set goals to run 5km in under 30 minutes, and expect it to happen overnight. Change takes time, especially when you want to make a big change. To stay motivated, it is important to set goals that are realistic and achievable. Nothing is more demotivating than being unable to reach your goal.

Set your ultimate goal: Whether that’s exercising more, or making more self-care time, it’s up to you. Looking at your ultimate goal, might feel scary and impossible. But dividing your goal into smaller pieces will make it more achievable. If you’re trying to run 5km this year without stopping, you shouldn’t focus on a total of 5km. Instead, start with 1km, and once you can complete that without stopping, move to 2km in order to reach that goal within a year. That sounds a lot more realistic, doesn’t it?

Staying focused and sticking to your goals

The key ingredient to staying focused and sticking to your goals is to be nice to yourself. This might sound strange, but forcing yourself to do something every day is not always the best approach. Keep your goal in mind and try to incorporate it into your daily routine. However, if you’re having a bad day or feeling sluggish, give yourself a break. Pushing yourself is important, but know when to listen to your body. Achieving your goals will only happen when you grant yourself moments of rest and self-care.

A great tip to stay focused and achieve your goals is to do it first thing in the morning. If your goal is to exercise more, start your morning off with a workout. After a long day of work, it can be hard to motivate yourself to work out, so why not do it at the start of the day? You can start your day feeling energised and motivated!

How to set goals with aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries and has proven to be very effective in changing our mood in a positive way. Aromatherapy is a form of holistic treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and wellbeing. When inhaling aromatherapy products such as balms, candles or mists, a part of our brain is impacted which controls several unconscious physiological functions like heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. We have recently partnered with the all natural aromatherapy brand, Scentered, to bring you a few of our favourite products.

Using an Aromatherapy Balm could help you to get in the right mindset. With five unique scents you will be able to transition your mind throughout the day to support your daily routine.

  1. Wake up feeling positive with the Happy aromatherapy blend to start the day right.
  2. Apply the Focus Balm to help you complete your resolution with determination.
  3. Inhale your De-Stress Balm or light your De-Stress Candle during your work day to calm your mind.
  4. Use Escape Balm to transition you to me-time after the working day.
  5. And finally, apply the Sleep Well Balm to your pulse points before you hit the pillow, to help you drift off into a restful sleep, ready to tackle your goal the next morning.

Stop. Inhale. Reset
