"WW has helped me become more mindful, I’m enjoying food more and I feel more energised. "
Gary has become renowned throughout the world for his passion for food and flavours. A successful restaurateur and TV personality, he’s appeared on everything from Australia’s Ready Steady Cook to MasterChef Australia and his captivating new series, Masters of Taste.
Leading a very busy life, Gary found that his wellness goals fell by the wayside as he hit his mid-30s. Regularly opting for on-the-go foods to fuel his long working hours, he gave little thought to his portion sizes. As he approached 50, he felt sluggish. That’s when he decided to join WW – an experience he says has made him feel better than ever.
What was it that motivated you to go on this wellness journey?
I’ve been consistently overweight since my mid-30s. Being a chef at a busy restaurant, it just got on top of me. I had periods where I wasn’t eating as well as I could have. Since turning 50, I’ve started making some moves to live a healthier life.
At the end of last year, I was the heaviest I’ve ever been – 16st 7lb. I was exercising and did boxing, but my progress was slow. I was fed up with feeling overweight and realised I was hindered by what I was eating.
I’ve been making an effort to think about food in a different way and it’s paid off. Now I’m running at the gym and I have more stamina when I do boxing. I definitely feel better. Putting on a suit and having it feel baggy is an amazing feeling.
What do you love most about WW?
It’s helped me become more mindful, I’m enjoying food more and I feel more energised. In no way has my food philosophy been compromised. I can enjoy bread knowing I can balance it out later in the day with a chickpea masala. I don’t have to exclude anything.
