Discover what works for you When I moved from Malawi to the UK in my early twenties, my diet completely changed, fuelled by my busy life and a lack of interest in cooking. I’d rely on takeaways, fried food or ready meals and by the age of 25, I was a size 18. Unlike a lot of my friends, I’ve realised I’m not the kind of person who likes to spend two hours in the kitchen. That doesn’t work for me – I want to be in and out. So instead of eating unhealthy convenience food, I’ve learned to grill and go.
Simple swaps make a big difference The greatest thing I’ve learned from following SmartPoints is that every little thing you do makes a difference. I’ve taught myself how to cook and realised that I can make myself dinner in the time it takes me to order a takeaway. I also made simple swaps, like having cauliflower rather than white rice. I carry fruit with me everywhere in case I get the urge to snack. And I make sure I stop, turn off the TV and enjoy my meals instead of mindlessly eating.
Non-scale victories are important My health is better, I no longer suffer from high blood pressure and my frequent colds and hayfever have tailed off, too. I’ve got heaps more get-up-and-go and even my skin has improved. I’m much more confident, which has changed the way I look at the world – now, I believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
My yes moment Running non-stop for 30 minutes for the first time, was my yes moment. Slowly, over time, the miles starting building up and I’m so proud to say I have just completed my second Birmingham half marathon and have signed up for Great Manchester Marathon and Birmingham Marathon for next year.
