This time, we’re delving into the YO! Sushi menu to bring you the top picks on a weight loss plan.

YO! Sushi starters & sides


This popular Japanese restaurant isn’t all sushi; it also serves authentic Japanese street food. 

Begin your YO! Sushi feast with chicken gyoza - chicken and vegetable filled dumplings - for 4 SmartPoints (SP). Vegan or vegetarian? The vegetable gyoza - spinach dumplings filled with cabbage, carrots, edamame and veggies - are also 4SP. Both are served with soy vinegar.  

For 5SP you can order the spicy pepper squid, garnished with red chilli and spring onions. If your Budget stretches to double digits, the popcorn shrimp tempura - tempura prawns drizzled with a sweet shiro miso and chilli sauce - is 11SP.

If you’re looking for a side dish (or a super healthy starter!) the edamame - pictured below - is 0SP. The stir-fried baby pak choi is 3SP and the kaiso seaweed salad - marinated mixed seaweed, edamame and carrot in a su-miso dressing - is 5SP.


YO! sushi rolls


Contrary to popular belief, sushi doesn’t mean ‘raw fish’ - the word ‘sushi’ actually means ‘sour tasting’. Why? Because the common thread running through all sushi dishes is not fish, but rice dressed with vinegar. This is then combined with all sorts of ingredients, from seaweed to cucumber to avocado.

Whether you’re a sushi superfan or trying it for the first time, get your sushi fix for 5 SmartPoints per portion with the salmon maki - fresh salmon wrapped in a nori (seaweed) roll - or the cucumber maki - cucumber and toasted sesame seeds wrapped in a nori roll.

The avocado maki is 7SP, comes with vegan mayo and is wrapped in a nori roll. The crunchy California roll - surimi (fish paste) and avocado topped with mayo, teriyaki and crunchy onion - is 9SP.

Feeling fancy? The salmon and avocado temaki hand roll is a cone-shaped sushi roll practically made for Instagram. With fresh salmon, avocado, mayo and toasted sesame seeds in a nori rice cone, this is serious #foodporn - plus it’s only 5SP!




Sashimi is raw, fresh seafood like salmon or tuna - and the great news is, it’s 0SP!

The salmon sashimi at Yo! Sushi is thick-sliced salmon with wakame seaweed and lemon, and the tuna sashimi consists of thick slices of yellowfin tuna with wakame seaweed and lemon. 




Nigiri is a small ball of rice topped with raw fish or other seafood. The salmon nigiri (pictured below) is fresh, hand-cut salmon served on sushi rice and will set you back just 2SP.

The inari taco nigiri - tofu ‘pockets’ filled with rice, avocado, ponzu salsa and vegan sriracha mayo - are 6SP.


Hot dishes

YO! Sushi is perfect for sharing, which means you can sample lots of different dishes for half the SmartPoints! 

The chicken katsu - chicken thigh in panko with a fruity tonkatsu sauce - is 6SP and the prawn katsu is 4SP. If you’re looking for a veggie and vegan option, the pumpkin katsu is 4SP and the tofu katsu is 6SP. 

You can order the chicken teriyaki - grilled chicken thighs in a salty sweet teriyaki glaze - on its own for 6SP or in a steamed bao burger bun with cucumber and pickled red onion for 7SP. There’s a vegan option too: the shiitake mushroom teriyaki burger for 6SP.

If you’re in the mood for one big meal, the chicken katsu curry - chicken in crispy Japanese panko crumb with a mild curry sauce and steamed rice - is 17SP. Crazy about katsu? Check out this chicken katsu curry recipe.

Need some noodles in your life? The vegetable yakisoba - stir-fried yakisoba noodles with crunchy vegetables served in a tangy sauce - is 4SP and suitable for vegans. The chicken yakisoba is also 4SP.

Japan is famous for innovation and not just in the world of technology; it also has a reputation for culinary creativity, evidenced in a range of unusual desserts. 

From sweet rice dumplings to anko (a sweet paste made from adzuki beans) and coffee jelly, Japan is the master of unique flavour combinations.

At YO! Sushi, try the dorayaki pancake - a fluffy Japanese pancake with a light custard centre served with a tangy raspberry coulis - for 6SP or the chocolate mochi - a chocolate truffle ganache in a mochi rice casing - for 9SP.

If you fancy more of a fusion dish, the chocolate pot has hints of miso and vanilla, and is 13SP. Got weeklies to use up? The chocolate brownie is 18SP, or share with a friend to save SmartPoints.

Alternatively, enjoy a fruit fix with the fresh fruit plate - including grapes, watermelon, pineapple and strawberries - for 0SP.
