Try these 3 ideas to help pep yourself up this week. It’s time to rise and shine!
1. Find your va-va-voom with vitamin D
Studies have shown that vitamin D, which our bodies make through exposure to sunlight, helps prevent muscle fatigue as well as keeping our energy levels up. But many of us are deficient in vitamin D throughout the winter months as we have little exposure to sunlight.
The latest government recommendations state that we should all be taking 10mcg vitamin D daily, particularly during autumn and winter. As well as taking a supplement, you can also top up your vitamin D levels by eating certain foods, including oily fish, eggs and fortified cereals.

2. Try a jolt of jasmine
This heady floral scent can give you a lift, according to a study from the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago in the US. The research found that the aroma of jasmine increases beta waves in the brain, making you more alert.
Try diffusing a few drops of pure jasmine oil in an aromatherapy burner, or simply put a couple of drops of it onto a tissue so you can have a quick sniff next time you’re in need of a pick-me-up. Alternatively, try peppermint oil – a recent study has found the scent can increase alertness.
3. Stretch it out
If you’re struggling to find the will to do your usual high-impact workout, try a quick indoor stretch or some low-intensity aerobic exercise, such as going for a gentle walk.
‘Research suggests that regular low-intensity exercise can increase energy levels by increasing blood circulation,’ says fitness expert Jennie Gadsby. ‘Try a standing side bend to help release tightness and tension in your muscles. Start by standing with your feet together, arms stretched up and over your head, with your fingers interlaced. Slowly exhale as you lean your arms over to one side, then breathe in as you return to the centre. Repeat on the other side.’
