Know your own strengths

Whatever your wellness goal, you can be sure you’ll get there faster if you tap into your natural strengths…

When we talk about ‘natural strengths’, we’re talking about those characteristics that make you feel like your best self. Tapping into these is a sure-fire way to help you reach your goals, but how do you identify what they are?

The VIA Institute on Character – a non-profit organisation led by psychologists and researchers that aims to help people apply the science of strengths to change their lives – has identified 24 positive traits shared by people everywhere. All you have to do, is figure out which ones best apply to you…

The 24 positive traits shared by all

Teamwork
Perseverance
Honesty
Curiosity
Zest
Appreciation of beauty
Love
Humility
Humour
Spirituality
Love of learning
Social intelligence
Forgiveness
Prudence
Judgement
Fairness
Hope
Creativity
Self-regulation
Bravery
Kindness
Leadership
Gratitude

How to use them

First, focus on the list above and pick out the five traits that best describe you. Then choose one to lean on while you go after a goal this week. So, if ‘love of learning’ is big for you, you might try a new recipe. Or, if kindness is one of your top traits, you could focus on posting at least three encouraging comments on Connect.

You’ll find that once you start tapping into your strengths in order to help reach your goals, you’ll be amplifying and growing the positive, which can help you to find the strength to keep going.
