Do you want to lose weight this year? We've rounded up some of our favourite (and some more unusual) weight loss apps for iOS and Android. 

A good weight loss app gives you the tools, motivation and accountability you need to lose weight and keep it off. But losing weight isn't just about eating more mindfully; sleep and stress are just two additional factors that can impact your weight, for instance.

With this in mind, here's our round-up of six awesome apps that can help improve your diet, sleep, stress, motivation and mindfulness, and nudge you towards your weight loss goals.

“Reading has long been known to help us relax,” says Jephtha Tausig, PhD, a clinical psychologist in New York. “In fact, quiet reading is often recommended as an activity to do right before light out as it helps our brains prepare to shut down for sleep.”

Reading compels you to be still. The very act of sitting or lying down and reading a book means your body is at rest, allowing your muscles to let go of tension and invoking calm, says Tausig. Reading also requires you to focus your mind on what’s right in front of you, says Steven Levine, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist and founder and CEO of Actify Neurotherapies. In short, losing yourself in a story may promote a sense of meditative calm.

4. parkrun

 

Parkrun organise free, weekly, timed 5km runs around the world - and everyone's welcome, from beginners right through to experienced runners. Whether you plan to do a jog/walk combo or smash your PB, parkrun is a fun, free way to stay on top of your fitness. The app provides access to your results and information about other parkruns.

Cost: Free for iOS. An official parkrun app is currently unavailable for Android, although there are other apps available, including 5k parkrunner results and park runner: weekly 5k results tracker.

 

5. Sweatcoin

 

It pays to move - literally! Sweatcoin converts your daily steps into currency units called sweatcoins, which you can redeem for goods, services and experiences. The fitter and healthier you get, the 'wealthier' you become. Rewards include anything from Skullcandy headphones and Apple Watches to anti-gravity yoga classes.

6. Colorfy

 

If you're looking for a boredom buster to combat boredom eating and associated weight gain, Colorfy could be a good place to start. It's a mindful colouring app (read: an adult colouring book brought into the digital realm) with patterns, mandalas, animals, florals and more. You can even upload your own drawings and bring them to life. Mindful colouring can give you a chance to relax, refocus and develop positive stress-coping mechanisms. Bonus: you can do it without being connected to Wi-Fi, which means no distractions.
