If you're an adolescent...

Here's what 13-to 17-year-old members should know.

Congrats on taking charge of your health! We're happy to have you join our WW Workshops. You'll be surrounded by people who are there to feel stronger, more powerful, and proud of what their body can do. 

Before you start, it's important that: 

  • You’re at least 13 years old,* with a BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile. (Once you turn 18, you can follow the  WW programme with no modifications).

  • Your parent or guardian provides a note from your doctor that gives you permission to join WW. The note should include your current BMI percentile and weight-loss goal for your first three months, based on what you, your parent, and your doctor think is a reasonable amount of weight to lose.

  • You check in with your doctor every six to nine months to assess your progress, make sure your current rate of weight loss is healthy, and to set a weight goal for the next three months.

  • Your parent or guardian also signs the Health Release at the time of your registration.

*Members under 18 are not eligible to sign up for Digital membership.

What to know

  1. You get a different daily SmartPoints® Budget than adults. You need a Daily Budget that takes into consideration the extra calories needed for growth and development, so we determine your personalised Budget differently than we do for adults. Your Coach will advise you about your Budget at your Workshop.

  2. We've designed the plan to help you lose weight at a healthy rate. A healthy rate of weight loss for adolescents is around 1lb a month. Steadily losing a small amount of weight really adds up in the long run, especially while you are still growing.​

Tips to help you get started

  • Replace soft drinks and juice with water and other low-calorie drinks.
  • Eat breakfast. It can supply you with essential nutrients for good health, and get you off to a good start.

  • Limit your non-homework screen time—TV, computers, and video games—to two hours or less per day.

  • Move a little more than you did before. For good health, you need to be active for about an hour a day. You don’t have to do the 60 minutes all at once—you could walk to and from school each day, or get off the bus a stop or two earlier.

One more thing...

Treat yourself like a friend. We all have a voice in our heads—what does yours sound like? Would you talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself? Self-compassion is a powerful force, especially on this journey. It means accepting that no one is perfect, and skipping the self-judgment. You treat yourself with understanding, acceptance, and kindness, whether things go well or not. It pays off: People who practice self-compassion are more likely to eat well, move more, and take good care of themselves—even when they’re stressed. 

Imagine a close friend is feeling down on themselves. What would you think about them? What would you say to them? Now remember a time when you felt bad about yourself. What did you think and say to yourself? Is it different from what you’d say to a friend? Why? Treat yourself like a friend the next time you’re struggling and see what happens.
