Losing as a Couple


 It’s great to be able to keep each other on track and to have that support all the time.

While in law school Matt and his fiancée Megan had put on some weight. But since subscribing to Weight Watchers Online they’ve changed their eating habits and combined have lost more than 100 pounds*!

In Matt’s words:

I was very athletic in high school and have worked out my entire life. But once I started law school, I wasn’t as active. I started gaining weight due to stress from studying for the Bar exam and I really didn’t care about watching what I ate. By the time the Bar came around, I was up to almost 250 pounds. In high school I was 180. When my fiancée Megan, who was also in law school with me, subscribed to Weight Watchers Online and immediately started seeing results, it was easy to jump on board. I loved that the weight loss was consistent: 1–2 pounds every week.

Getting started

The first month was a little difficult for me. I just wasn’t used to healthy food. I don’t really like vegetables, so it was hard making those changes — I still craved junk food. After a while though, I noticed I just wasn’t as hungry. I didn’t need to be eating the amount that I had previously. That made me feel healthier.

Making changes

Before Weight Watchers I ate fast food, pizza and Chinese food a few times a week. Finally I saw a picture of myself from a tailgate and I thought, wow, I’m big and I’ve got to reel it in a little. The first thing I did was cut out the garbage I was eating.

Now I eat more often, probably six times a day and on a schedule. Before, I’d miss breakfast, and snack on junk throughout the day. But now I snack on pre-picked foods at certain times. Working at a law office there’s always great food around. Now I try to steer clear of that. I have a snack at 10:30 and 4 and then have dinner at 7 or 8. I’m never hungry. Am I still tempted by junk food? Sure. But now I just say no. I also don’t have stomach issues or heartburn anymore, which I used to get all the time. The results speak for themselves.

Using eTools

I really exclusively use my iPhone® to stay on Plan. The Weight Watchers Mobile app is always on and always with me. It’s just so convenient and easy to look up foods and plug them right into my food Tracker. I also track my weight on there each week.

A guy’s diet

My closest guy friend and his wife subscribed to Weight Watchers Online as well. A lot of guys think it’s funny to be on Weight Watchers and they’d give me a hard time, but once saw the results, they stopped joking and started doing it themselves!

I’d always gone to the gym. I went all the time. Guys think that’s all you need to do, but it doesn’t work. For me, losing weight was all about my diet, simple as that. I was just eating the wrong things. You can work out as much as you want, but without eating better, you’re not going to see the results you want.

Losing as a couple

I don’t know if I could have done it without Megan. To have someone on the same page with you is so helpful. We buy the same groceries and eat the same meals together — at least one meal a day. If I want to eat a brownie and she might talk me out of it. It’s great to be able to keep each other on track and to have that support all the time.

And then there was the incident of the Meatloaf Surprise. I always say it was meatloaf made with lies. She ground up vegetables and added it to the meatloaf and didn’t tell me until after I ate it! I don’t trust her anymore! But yes, now it’s true, I eat more vegetables.

More than a diet

Weight Watchers isn’t just about counting PointsPlus® values. It’s a total lifestyle change. I changed everything about my eating habits. Before, you couldn’t put cupcakes within 10 feet of me, but now I have the strength and knowledge to know not to eat it. I’m not going back to my old ways of eating a ton of fast food and junk food. This has changed how I’m going to eat for the rest of my life. It’s become second nature to me, a way of life.
