Success with the Missus

*People following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.

Brian only joined Weight Watchers Meetings to support his wife. But when he found out the program isn’t just for women, he lost weight, too.

My wife quit smoking and wanted to do something to keep from gaining extra weight, so we joined the gym. She had been to Weight Watchers meetings in the past and suggested joining again, but I didn’t like the idea. I thought Weight Watchers was just for women. I joined Weight Watchers meetings hesitantly, as a way of supporting my wife in her journey towards getting healthy. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made. It opened my eyes to what a healthy life really is. It’s great that my wife and I are able to attend meetings together and support one another throughout the process.

Feeling better about myself

Since joining Weight Watchers meetings I have more confidence than I’ve ever had, and I’m able to do more activities each day without getting tired. I also easily fit in a size 32 pants, which is something I haven’t been able to do since before high school. The compliments I’ve received since starting the Program have helped motivate me to stick with it, as have the good feelings I experience each time I see myself in the mirror. My wife and I have motivated both of my in-laws, my mom, my aunt, two of my co-workers and one of my wife’s co-workers to join Weight Watchers, too.

To reward myself for reaching my goal weight, I got a new tattoo on my ribs. I’d always wanted a tattoo in that spot, but due to my weight I didn’t feel comfortable. Now I do.

The freedom to choose

My favorite thing about PointsPlus® is that I don't feel deprived. I’m able to eat anything I want as long as I follow the Program and calculate my PointsPlus® values properly. It’s not like other programs where you need to buy yucky food and can’t eat anything else. Weight Watchers has really opened my eyes to the wonderful world of fruits and vegetables, which are things that I previously would have avoided at the supermarket. I used to head for the potato chip aisle.

The Program helped me learn substitutions and alternatives for unhealthy foods that I previously wouldn’t have hesitated to eat.

Achieving success

My biggest breakthrough was hitting the 5 percent and 10 percent goals. It brought me such a sense of achievement and was great motivation to keep moving forward and maintaining the discipline to keep losing. After attending my first meeting I knew I was going to be successful on the Program. Sometimes my Leader does a “Big Clothes” day where members are encouraged to bring in articles of clothing that they wore when they first started their Weight Watchers journey, or to show before and after photos and tell a story about how they got to where they are now. Sharing my story and being able to motivate other people makes me feel really special. I was hesitant at first, but I realized that if my success is able to motivate just one other person in the group, then it's totally worth it.

Brian’s Tips
  • It’s possible to learn self control when eating, and to realize the difference between being hungry and eating because I'm bored.
  • Sharing stories of weight loss success can be a great way to motivate others.
  • Attending weekly meetings is a great way to stay on track, since there is no way to hide the numbers on the scale
