Tips for improving your mood
1. Listen to some ‘happy’ music
‘Happy’ means upbeat, and it’s scientifically proven to work as a mood booster, as long as you focus on the fact that you’re trying to feel happier while you listen. If you don’t, a happy tune isn’t nearly as effective at improving mood, say researchers.
2. Dress happy
Got an outfit or a particular piece of clothing that makes you feel ‘sunny’? Put it on the next time you need a hit of happiness. A UK study made the link between clothing choices and mood, with researchers confirming that it’s a smart, effective strategy to put on clothes we associate with happiness when we’re feeling low.
3. Hug a tree
Okay, you don’t actually have to wrap your arms around its trunk – simply being around nature will do the trick. According to one study just doing something active in a natural setting, like a park, a beach or even your garden, for as little as five minutes has a positive effect on mood and mental health.
4. Walk with your shoulders pushed back
Making that one small tweak to how you walk has a big effect on your mood – in short, you’ll feel more upbeat. The opposite’s totally true, too. Walk with your shoulders slumped and your mood will nosedive. So, walk with a spring in your step and your feelings will follow. How simple’s that?
5. Hang out with ‘happy’
It turns out happiness is infectious – so connect with a friend who’s happy and your own mood’s likely to benefit, too. You don’t even have to catch up in person to experience the effect – US researchers say happiness spreads via social networks, as well.
