Then & Now
Feeling like a hypocrite
M y ‘A-ha!’ moment is one I’ll never forget. I had been at my largest – 115kg – when I was handed a flyer for the local gym. It was almost like fate, really. I was lethargic and down, and I felt like such a hypocrite. There I was giving advice to my patients about how to prevent or control gestational diabetes while I was enormously overweight myself.
"My initial fitness test at the gym was completely shocking. At only 24 years old my physical age was that of an 88-year-old woman. I joined the gym straightaway."
A few weeks later I met some friends for dinner. One I hadn’t seen in five months and she just looked incredible, having lost more than 24kg with Weight Watchers.
In the past, my friend and I had tried all the fad diets that had come and gone – the cleanses, the shakes, the fasts… but nothing worked. Then, she found WW. She explained how the system worked and how supportive the meetings are, so that night, despite my trepidation, I vowed to sign up.
With WW, I found that I didn’t have to give up any of the food that I loved – I just controlled my portions and modified my choices. Before, I’d choose a creamy pasta sauce, but now I’ll have a tomato-based sauce as it has less SmartPoints.
Since joining the Program, I’ve learned about food preparation and healthy cooking methods as well as eating for longevity, and health and wellbeing. Now I don’t ever treat myself with food. These days, my rewards involve shopping for a new outfit, or having a relaxing massage.
Amping up the exercise
As I became slimmer, fitter and healthier, I found that my regular gym sessions weren’t cutting it for me any more. They were no longer challenging and I started to find them a little boring.
My fiancé had joined a local CrossFit gym and urged me to do the same. I could see how much he was gaining from the sessions – both physically and emotionally – so I joined, too. I haven’t looked back since! I love the variation as well as the results – I’m stronger all over and I’ve lost a further 3kg.
As I approached Goal I was so thrilled with my progress and promised myself that I’d run the Blackmore’s Marathon in Sydney. This year, not only did I complete it, but I did so in less than my goal time of five hours and 38 minutes!
I would tell others not to give up! When I started, I had a huge amount of weight to lose and it seemed so overwhelming. I broke my goal down into 5kg increments, and it made things much easier. It showed me that my achievement was only around the corner. Once I overcame one challenge, I would set another – just another 5kg, and so on.
I’m getting married this year and my sister is in my bridal party. She’s already lost 10kg on Weight Watchers by eating healthily as she’s determined to look amazing for the wedding pictures. Another good friend has also joined the Program, and she has lost 6kg so far. It gives me such a thrill to see how healthy and happy they are.
My Coach, mentor & friend
There were times when I thought it was insurmountable. I’d have a bad weigh-in and I’d question the point of it all. My coach, Marie, was so supportive. She understood and guided me through, which was so helpful. We’re so close that she’s going to be one of my bridesmaids.
Learing to love my body
When I was overweight, I hated looking in the mirror, especially if I was naked.
"Now, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m not scared to be naked, even when I’m getting a massage or a spray tan. I’d have never had that confidence before, and I owe it all to WW."
