4 SmartPoints-Friendly Snacks For Your Next Game Day

Keep on-plan while watching your favourite sporting events.

It can be difficult to healthily navigate game-day get togethers, especially when everyone else seems to be enjoying fried and overly sweet treats (not to mention all the beer and booze often accompanying all the rich food). Luckily, it’s a lot easier to arrive feeling like you’re making empowered choices when you have delicious and SmartPoints-friendly options to choose from. These party snacks are hearty enough for all your guests to enjoy and can be made from easy-to-find and cost-effective ingredients.

Cauliflower nachos

Using roasted cauliflower in place of tortilla chips means that you can eat these nachos to your heart’s content. Drizzle cauliflower florets with a scant amount of olive oil and roast in a 400°F oven for 20-30 minutes or until the cauliflower is crispy and brown in spots. Load up the cauliflower with all your favourite nacho toppings and finish with a layer of Monterey Jack or mild cheddar cheese. Serve cauliflower nachos with salsa, plain nonfat yogurt, and guacamole.

Cucumber tuna boats

Hollowed-out cucumber filled with tuna (packed in water) will satisfy crunchy snack cravings while sticking with ZeroPointTM  foods. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of nonfat plain yogurt with a can of drained water-packed tuna; season with salt and pepper, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, and a generous tablespoon of minced capers. Using a small spoon, hollow out a halved cucumber lengthwise and fill with the tuna mixture. Top with fresh parsley and thinly sliced scallions to serve.

Deviled eggs

Deviled eggs are currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, with many restaurants and bars offering their own version of this classic snack as part of their tasting menu. Deviled eggs are endlessly adaptable and can be made ahead of time so you won’t get caught peeling 24 hard-boiled eggs as your guests are arriving. Begin with a dozen hard-boiled eggs that have been peeled and cooled. Carefully halve each egg lengthwise and remove the yolk, being careful to not disturb the whites as you work. Mash up the egg yolks with a few tablespoons of nonfat plain yogurt, adding a small amount of mayonnaise for the most authentic flavour. Either mash into the yolks or top the deviled eggs with smoked paprika, capers, thinly sliced cornichons, and very finely diced celery.

Naan pizzas

Make super simple individualized pizzas with naan bread (about 6 SmartPoints per piece) and all your favourite pizza toppings. Better yet, allow your guests to build their own customized creations and have them bring a topping or two to share. Naan can be made from scratch and many grocery stores now carry naan in the bread aisle. Bake naan pizzas at 375°F for 10 minutes, giving them an additional 1-2 minutes under the broiler. Try some of the following combinations for your naan pizzas:

  • Sauces: tomato paste, pesto, hummus, tapenade, olive oil with garlic, and oregano
  • Vegetarian toppings: assorted veggies, fresh herbs, roasted red pepper or garlic, pickled vegetables, capers, and olives
  • Cheese: Mozzarella (fresh or regular), cheddar, brie, asiago, parmesan, feta, blue cheese, and dairy-free cheese
  • Meat: shredded chicken or pork, salami, cubed ham, ground turkey, and crumbled turkey bacon
