SmartPoints tracking vs calorie counting
When it comes to how food impacts your body, calories or kilojoule tell part of the story—but not all. For example, 100 calories-worth of biscuits won’t provide the same nutrients that 100 calories of chicken, tofu, or vegetables would.
Calorie counting without looking at other nutrients may not result in a healthy eating pattern, which is crucial for reducing the risk of disease and weight loss.
SmartPoints vs calories
SmartPoints® give you what a calorie calculator can’t.
For example, two foods might contain the same number of calories, but have a very different SmartPoints value.
A ham sandwich made with wholemeal thins, lettuce, tomato and 2 tsp light mayo with a tub of 99% fat-free yoghurt is equal to 1,300kJ and 8 SmartPoints on Green or 5 SmartPoints on Blue and Purple. Whereas one regular sugar coated jam-filled doughnut is equal to 1,200kJ and 12 SmartPoints on all three plans.
Healthy eating made simple
We want to help you reach your weight-loss goals, but we also want you to eat what you love. Along the way you'll build a positive, healthy relationship with that food; one that can last a lifetime.
Our SmartPoints system takes complex nutritional science, and distills it down to one easy-to-use number: the SmartPoints value. It's based on four components:
It's all backed by the latest nutritional science, and gently guides you towards a healthier pattern of eating with more lean protein, fruits and veg, and less sugar and fats.
Your SmartPoints Budget
You have a personalised daily SmartPoints Budget. It’s up to you how you spend them.
In addition to your daily Budget, you also have a weekly Budget for added flexibility. You can use this as a cushion if you’re going out for a meal, or just want a special treat.
You also have the option to roll over up to 4 SmartPoints per day. They'll automatically roll over into your weeklies.
Here’s the real secret to success
Be kind to yourself. Perfection is overrated. It tends to lead straight to the "I’ve blown it" effect, where one bowl of chocolate ice-cream makes you feel like you might as well give up and go for seconds. Instead, try to be pretty good most of the time: Follow your Budget, make healthy choices, and keep going. This is a lifestyle shift, not a temporary fix.
