"I want to help others find the happy place that I’ve found"
Kate's weight loss story
Name: Kate Spence
Weight loss: 30kg
Goal Weight: 67kg
How long it took: 11 months
How she did it: 1-on-1 and Group Coaching in Penrith, NSW, with Angie Jodrell.
When I lost 20kg, I burst into tears on the scales and everyone gave me high-fives. It was very emotional – I couldn’t believe it.
My husband and I traveled around Australia
About two years ago my husband Damien and I decided to travel around Australia in a caravan. We took our son Lachlan, now 3, and off we went for seven months. We were eating too much and getting lots of takeaway – but it was a happy time: I fell pregnant with Benjamin, now 18 months old, on that trip. I gained more weight than I should have while I was pregnant and, after Benjamin was born, I hated the way I looked. When people came to visit I wouldn’t let them take photos of me with him, which was devastating. Three months after Benjamin was born, I was still wearing my maternity clothes and I knew I had a problem.
My mum, sister and grandma had done Weight Watchers
Weight Watchers is a bit of a family tradition – I’d done the Program before so I knew it worked. My grandmother lost 25kg and is a Lifetime Member; my mother lost 22kg and is a Lifetime Member; and my sister lost 16kg and has remained at Goal. For me, happiness started the day I walked through that door and admitted I needed help. As I started to lose weight and feel better about myself I became even happier.
I used to do a lot of emotional eating
If I had a bad day I’d reward myself with chocolate, but now I’ve learnt to deal with my emotions better. Now if I want to eat something I’ll remind myself that nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels. When I lost 20kg it was one of the biggest moments in my journey. It was such a lot of weight and it felt so significant. I burst into tears on the scales and everyone gave me high-fives. It was very emotional – I couldn’t believe it.
"My thyroid has always been an issue, but the last time I had a test the levels were perfect - that hasn’t happened in more than 10 years and I’m sure it’s due to the weight loss."
My thyroid issues are now perfect
Focusing on myself and my health has made me so much happier and more confident. I love the way clothes fit me now – I feel good and look good. My overall health has improved, too. My thyroid has always been an issue, but the last time I had a test the levels were perfect - that hasn’t happened in more than 10 years and I’m sure it’s due to the weight loss.
I've become a runner
My dad was a runner, so that was an inspiration but, when I started out, I couldn’t even run to the end of my street! I used the C25K (Couch to 5km) app and within eight weeks I was running 5km. I’m now part of a group called Running Mums Australia and this year I ran the 8km Mother’s Day Classic, with more races to come.
Fit and 40
My 40th birthday is around the corner and I’m really excited! It’s a big age for women, but I’m embracing it. I’m really proud of myself knowing that I’m in the best shape of my life. I haven’t been this weight since I was 25, and I wasn’t this fit and healthy in my 30s but I’m about to turn 40. It’s a very happy place for me. At the party I’m going to frock up and I won’t mind who takes my photo! I can also confidently look forward to the next 40 years of my life. We have a very strong history of diabetes in our family that’s directly related to weight, but now I don’t have to worry about that. I’m excited about the next chapter of my life.
I'm now a WW Coach
I’ve started doing part-time work for WW, coaching on a Tuesday night in Penrith, and I’m hoping to start doing some phone and 1-on-1 Coaching, too. I love working as a coach – seeing the joy in people’s faces when they have a loss and being able to point them in the right direction when they haven’t lost. Having a positive impact on people’s lives is all I’ve ever wanted to do. My sister is a nurse and I’ve always looked at her and thought, ‘She makes a difference.’ Now I feel I can say that about myself as well. If just one person reads my story and thinks, ‘I can do it too’ as a result, then I’ve achieved what I wanted. I want to help others find the happy place that I’ve found.
