Before & Now
“ I had just come back from a holiday to Vanuatu with my sister, who’s a size 8–10. I looked at the photos of us and thought, that’s it. ”
I’ve been big since I was little
My brother and sister have always been the thin ones – I take after Mum and have her bigger frame. Once I was married, we were trying to have kids for 10 years and that monopolised my life. I fell into bad habits and kept putting on more weight until I reached a size 18.
I had no confidence
I never wanted to be in photos. I’d look at them and say, “Oh my god – I’m not really that big am I?” You visualise yourself differently to what you actually are.
I took control of my life
I had just come back from a holiday to Vanuatu with my sister, who’s a size 8–10. I looked at the photos of us and thought, that’s it. My kids [Adriana, 13, and twins, Luke and Renée, 10] were becoming more independent, too, so it was the right time to start my Weight Watchers journey.
I became organised
You really need to be prepared and work out what you’re going to cook for the week ahead, and I make sure I always have fresh fruit and vegies in the fridge. The Weight Watchers eTools are great, too, because you can use your own recipes, input your quantities and it works out the SmartPoints values for you.
My clothes started falling off
One day during the journey I went shopping with my husband. I was wearing a pair of pants and they were way too big. My husband said, “You can’t keep walking around with your pants falling down – go and buy yourself a pair of jeans!” So I did. Now I’m wearing other things I never thought I could: shorts, bright colours, and black tights with boots and a little dress on top.
The days are longer
I get so much out of my days now – they’re longer because I have more energy and I’m living life!.
Back to my teen weight
I’m now 63kg and a size 10–12. I haven’t been this small since I was in my teens. I was wearing a dress the other day and I’m now 63kg and a size 10–12. I haven’t been this small since I was in my teens. I was wearing a dress the other day and myself and say, “WOW!”.
Joanna 's weight-loss tips
Put on your workout gear first thing in the morning. I get dressed for exercise, drop the kids to school, then go for a walk.
Create your own workout. I do push-ups and lunges on park benches.
Lift weights in your pyjamas. I lift hand weights in front of the TV in my pyjamas. All you need is 10 minutes and that’s a bit of fitness added to your day.
