World Cup Menu Series: Part 2

There's a lighter way to enjoy watching Europe’s heavyweights in World Cup action. Tuck in to our European dishes.
Football scene

Supporters of the continental European heavyweights of Italy, Germany, Spain and France are famously passionate but merciless if disappointed. Luckily they have some superb national dishes to fall back on if the worst should happen.

The following dishes are all easy to prepare, so if you're entertaining, or simply want some inspiration whilst watching the soccer, take note of these tasty options.

French flag Winners on home soil in 1998, "Les Bleus" haven’t always been seen as a premier team and can be quite temperamental on the pitch. Fans are never quite sure whether the players will make a good showing on the day, but there’s certainty in French cuisine. French onion soup is a classic but can take time, so try these delicious crepes instead.
Fresh Strawberry Crepes

German flag Famously beaten by England in the 1966 final to hand England their only World Cup win, the Germans have an excellent World Cup record, appearing in no less than seven finals, equal best with Brazil. Unfairly best known for sauerkraut, bratwurst sausages and dumplings, they’re also master bakers and Germany is home to the pretzel. This potato salad is pretty fantastic, too.
German-Style Potato Salad

Italian flag The land of "la dolce vita" (the beautiful life), Italians rarely agree on anything, but have a shared passion for good wine and great food. The Azzurri emerged victorious at the 2006 World Cup and hopes for success again this year are riding high. Try a simple pizza or combine Italy’s most famous ingredients in a panini.
Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Paninis

Spanish flag Host to two of the world’s biggest clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, the Spaniards are much fancied after their stellar victory at Euro 2008. They’ve some young talent too so expect fireworks. Paella is a time-consuming dish to make so opt for any spiced pork dish featuring chorizo instead, or a refreshing alcoholic drink.
