Happier Hours

I never dreamed I’d be able to do it all: have a job I love, take great care of my kids and make my health a priority. But I’m doing it!
*People following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.
Sandra had tried every weight-loss fad she came across. But with little success as the years passed, this working mother of three resigned herself to be forever overweight. Until her employer offered a Weight Watchers At Work meeting. With the constant support of her co-workers, she was able to lose the weight.

In Sandra’s words:

Growing up, I was always on the heavy side. I wasn’t obese, but I never looked like my friends. I had low self-esteem. Even as a teenager I tried diet pills, vegetarian diets, joined gyms and tried the cabbage soup diet—pretty much any fad I was told about.

I eventually got married and had my first child, jumping from a size 8 to a size 16. This continued gradually for the next decade. At my heaviest I was 232 pounds. The heavier I got the less I could do with my three children. I wanted to play soccer and ride bikes, but I was just too big.

I felt unhealthy, tired and in constant pain in my feet, knees, back and neck—all from carrying the extra weight. I accepted it like I didn’t care, never letting on to others how horrible I felt about how I looked. I assumed I wasn’t meant to be thin; it just wasn’t in my genes.

The At Work difference

When my employer decided to offer a Weight Watchers At Work meeting, I knew I had nothing to lose. I was hopeful and excited because I knew I would be in the meeting with the other girls from work. That made it fun—losing weight was no longer a chore. Throughout the week we all kept one another on track. We had a stash of healthy snacks, so if anyone ran out, we could go to any of the others for a Weight Watchers snack bar, oatmeal, fruit or a can of soup.

One girl in my group helped me figure out how to set up eTools on my phone. That was huge for me because I don’t sit in front of a computer all day, but my phone is with me all the time. I use the app to scan barcodes and look up foods to find out the PointsPlus® value. It makes tracking easy.

Powering through a plateau

At one point, I hit a weight-loss plateau. I just wasn’t losing as quickly as I wanted. That’s when a friend told me about the ActiveLink® activity monitor. She told me that when she started wearing it, she was inspired to move more, which jump-started her weight loss. She was right. I started out by just walking. Whenever the kids were at sports practice, I’d walk around the field. Then I joined a gym and little by little I’d crave more and more activity. I don’t really like taking group exercise classes, but I really like the elliptical machine. I gradually built up from 20 minutes to an hour.

A more energetic mom

Now that I’ve lost the weight I’m pain-free! I have tons of extra energy and more desire to do things. I can finally play with my kids! We go bike riding, roller skating and toss the ball around. I don’t dread it. I’m actually out there with them. I used to avoid things like swimming because I wanted to cover up and just watch the kids in the water. But now I’m in the pool with them.
I never dreamed I’d be able to do it all—have a job I love, take great care of my kids and make my health a priority. But I’m doing it!
