*People following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.

Robyn wasn’t obese, but she was unhappy with her body. See how this grad student used Weight Watchers Online to lose her extra weight.

The backstory

I’m a native New Yorker. My family is Jewish and we love eating. Food is really a big part of our lives. It was great when I was growing up because I was always active and athletic. I never had to worry about what I ate. I never really knew how to gauge my fullness before, especially at restaurants. I would just order carelessly, overeat and slip into a food coma.

But when I started graduate school full-time, studying elementary and special education, I became really busy. I needed to think more about what I was eating.

Her a-ha moment

My a-ha moment happened on Thanksgiving. I had a nice dinner with my family. As usual, it was all about the food: turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce. After that meal, I just felt so full to the point of discomfort and I just knew I couldn’t take it anymore. It felt like the food was controlling me instead of the other way around. So that night I subscribed to Weight Watchers Online and started following the Plan. I haven’t looked back.

The college life

It’s so easy to get caught up in the college lifestyle: dining hall, junk food everywhere. It’s a little hard to resist. Even if there are healthy food options available, if you don’t know how to work the nutrition into your life, you’re still going to pick the sweet stuff. And the weight just creeps up over time. The 15 pounds was really weighing me down, draining my energy. I was lethargic.

If something great happened, I wanted to celebrate with a margarita and tacos and, why stop there? Let’s get dessert, too! And I always wanted to snack at night. Now I’ll still do that sometimes, but with healthier choices.

Why Weight Watchers?

I think people have this idea in their head that in order to follow the Weight Watchers plan you need to be very overweight to be successful. I’m happy to say that’s not the truth for everyone. When you only have 15 pounds to lose, it’s easy to say “I can do it on my own,” but Weight Watchers Online gave me the discipline I needed to get in shape.

I also really love the amazing amount of recipes they have online. Now I love to cook. Now I can braise meat. Before subscribing to Weight Watchers Online, I didn’t even know what the word “braise” meant! I now feel comfortable working my way around the kitchen.

It was great to be able to still have pie. I can still have spinach and artichoke dip. But I’m making them with healthier ingredients and using portion control to do it. You don’t need to sacrifice flavor for health. No more microwaved ramen noodles for me.

More than just counting PointsPlus® values

A lot of people think Weight Watchers is all about the tracking and nothing else. But Weight Watchers Online has been much more helpful than just giving me PointsPlus values. There’s articles about healthy living, fitness, science. The WeightWatchers.com website also has a great Community section. It was just an endless source of knowledge for me. Now I feel just as hungry for that knowledge as I am for food.

The family factor

At first, friends and family would say, “Why are you on Weight Watchers Online? Why do you need this Plan?” They were confused because I didn’t have a lot of weight to lose. But now that they’ve seen my results they’re asking me how many PointsPlus values certain foods are. They’ve jumped on the bandwagon. It’s a domino effect. People want to be healthier when they see your success.

Sticking with it

Before starting the Plan I didn’t have self control. I would sneak a cookie or two, three, four, five, six…who knows! I wasn’t keeping track. You think if no one sees you eat it, it won’t affect your weight. Of course that’s not true. Now it’s the little breakthroughs that keep me motivated. Now I can have a staring contest with a plate of cookies and win.

The new Robyn

I’ve dropped from a size 10 to a size 2. Before Weight Watchers Online I never would have believed I could wear a size 2. Shopping has turned from a tragic experience to something I look forward to. I’m also becoming a bit more daring. I wouldn’t want to show my arms before. Now I do. I use more fitted options that show off my figure. I’m so much more confident and enthusiastic. This is who I am now. This is my new body, the new me, and I love it.
